That evening, as has been the routine of late, I had my dinner with Rini, and we went for a stroll. We were talking sweet nothing, and were oblivious to the world around us. Unknowingly, or perhaps subconsciously we walked towards the overhang. In the dark nothing much was visible. Locating a convenient spot off the road, we sat down under a tree. I put my head on Rini’s lap and the world appeared at peace. I do not know how long we were there, when a slight tremor of the earth and distant rumble startled us. I stood up, and went towards the stream to investigate. Suddenly the sound intensified, and I realised what it was. It was a landslide. “Run Rini”, I heard myself shouting. My voice drowned in the crescendo of falling boulders. I was hit and felt myself falling over the edge of the cliff. I fell for a second or two, time moved in slow motion. My back hit something, and I was tearing through foliage. Suddenly something hit the back of my head, and blackness surrounded me. I lost consciousness.

About the Book
Driftwood is the story of Rini and Rajiv. It is about their love and loss, their struggle and success. It follows their journey from a slum in India to the Himalayan foothills, trekking the high paths in the land of the gods to the world of show business and high finances of property developers. It is about their meeting, parting, and shaping of their future.
About the Author
This book is a work of fiction based on my experience and imagination. My childhood was spent in Ranchi. I went to St. Xavier's School and later to the college of the same name. After passing MBBS from Armed Forces Medical College, I spent six years in the Army, some of it in Kashmir, and later with a parachute regiment. I spent six months in the Border Roads, and was impressed with the dedication and hardship of its workforce. I was in Project Deepak, in the Garhwals. Later I moved to the United Kingdom to pursue surgical training, and at present working as a general surgeon in the NHS. I have a MBA from University of Central Lancashire. My wife, Soma is also a doctor, and my son Avishek wishes to pursue a career in music.
