The book traces the history and growth of Indian media and the relevant laws governing it, specifically the proposed Broadcast Bill and the stages it crossed to evolve into its present form. The book is an interesting compendium of the changing positions of the governments of the day in response to the emerging needs of the industry. The book also catches up with the emerging trends of the media industry in the country after it was opened up for foreign investment and the country opted for economic liberalization twenty-five years ago. It gives a detailed account of the Foreign Direct Investment in the media industry and its direct or indirect impact on ownership control and content besides profiling some emerging giants of the industry in the country. The book also suggests steps to be taken for regulating the balance between investment, ownership control, and content to ensure the diversity of opinion and views.


About the Author

Born and brought up in turmoil hit Kashmir province of Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, Dr. Ahsan has been a journalist by profession and media critic by passion. He has held several sensitive media/PR assignments for the provincial Government. Dr. Ahsan did his schooling and college from his hometown Baramulla and Masters in Communication from University of Kashmir before moving to Pune University-often termed as Oxford of East-for pursuing Ph. D. in Communication Studies under the guidance of renowned Communication specialist Dr. Keval J. Kumar. Dr. Ahsan has written hundreds of articles and Write ups on a broad spectrum of issues including SAARC, Indo-Pak relations, Kashmir; current turmoil, its history, constitutional development, governance, human rights, environment, women’s issues and other subjects.
