About the Book

Mount Tai, known as the Eastern Great Mountain in China, boasts rich historical and cultural heritage, which has long been intertwined with the “Mountain Porter” spirit. The Mount Tai Porters are a product of China’s traditional society and its labor culture. Though the development of the economy and society today gradually drained the demand for mountain porters, the “Mountain Porter” spirit has profound historical significance and serves as an inspiration for modern society. This book provides a comprehensive and systematic study of the Mount Tai porters. Grounded in the context of the new era, it employs a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on history, cultural studies, anthropology, folklore, museology, and communication studies. The book examines the historical and cultural significance of the porters while exploring the preservation and promotion of the “Mountain Porter” spirit. It broadens the scope of Mount Tai culture, contributing to the advancement of Mount Tai studies, the innovation of its cultural heritage, and the expansion of its global influence. Combining academic rigor with accessibility, it is an essential read for researchers of Mount Tai and Chinese culture, as well as traditional culture enthusiasts and travelers.
