Tim was aware of the importance of the Female Factory at Parramatta, for the female convicts and for the colony. Upon arrival in Sydney the female convicts were either sent to married couples or officers as servants and housekeepers, or to the Female Factory. This factory was their work place, accommodation, medical help and the orphanage. Their work depended on their crime and included stone breaking, laundry, rope making, needlework, sewing, spinning and the weaving of wool and linen into cloth. Some of these ladies were given the opportunity to marry and become a free person. It was possible for a man to approach the lady in charge of the factory and state he would like a wife. Well behaved women, who were interested in marriage, were lined up for the man to choose from. If he found one he thought suitable, more questions were asked by both the man and woman. If they wished to be married this was quickly arranged and the woman became a ‘free person’.

About the Book
Timothy has enjoyed his school years in the first town in the new colony of New South Wales. Since he came from England he has watched the town of Sydney grow and has seen how the convicts have built many substantial buildings. In the first story of this book Tim considers a number of activities, in and around Sydney, that the convicts have been involved in, that have made a substantial difference in this settlement. During Tim's time in New South Wales he has witnessed the crossing of the rugged Blue Mountains by Europeans and a road being built that has made a significant difference in opening up land to the West of these mountains. Tim is keen to do his own 'exploring' in these mountains and in the second story he sets out on his own trip across this rugged terrain. Illustrations from early European days in Australia provide the reader with added insight into these times.
