Xal-An, aide-de-camp to Admiral Ax-Ner, watched the grim-faced men gathering around the specially-constructed relief map on its massive table, the centrepiece of a crowded room. Officers, both Army and Navy, kept going up to it, looking for a while, muttering to themselves and shaking their heads before walking away. Notwithstanding the chill of approaching night, dying embers in the fireplace at the rear wall were ignored. No-one thought to put another log on the fire. The westering sun, setting across the Gulf of Smurne, cut a visible shaft from the high window through the smoky haze. The Governor's palace this evening was not its usual slow-paced, languid haven, but an ant's nest swarming with anxious officers. Xal-An could hear downstairs the tap-tap of scurrying feet on the flagstones, shouts and raised voices. No one else seemed to notice the almost tangible tension in the room. The atmosphere had not reached the stage of panic, he thought, but he could feel a deeply pervasive concern, tinged equally with fear and disbelief.

But first he must content with the machinations of his nemesis, Al-Jinn, the evil high priest of Bel—not to mention those of Queen Zeuxippe, his own scheming mother. With only limited time, Erech and his twin brother Boutes call on their every skill, friendship, and honor debt. As war looms, Boutes sets out on a desperate search for allies in faraway lands. At home, Erech slowly recuperates, worried that he will not have the strength needed for the final battle. Even with help from unexpected quarters Pandion's forces, still vastly outnumbered, must test to their utmost the friendships, skills and knowledge Erech gained while a hostage if they are to avoid annihilation by a ruthless enemy.

Phil Cantrill was raised on a farm near Orange, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. After a career in a busy legal practice, he retired to pursue his muse and write fantasy novels, including his Destruction trilogy. He currently lives on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia.
