As I said in the dedication, there was a story associated with CPT Adam Malty-Uhr, and it has nothing to do with potato salad. While we were deployed to Afghanistan, I was hired by the University of Maryland to teach college classes for the deployed soldiers. Based on my degrees, they offered for me to teach Intro to Computer Science, a project management class, and a class titled, Ethics in the Computer Age. I readily agreed to teach the intro class for one semester. The class went well and I truly enjoyed it. When the 10th Mountain Division replaced us at Camp Airborne, the team was split and most of us were sent to Camp Dubs in Darulaman, not far from Kabul. Camp Dubs was full of young service members, most of whom ran the headquarters, and some who went on combat missions. For the most part the combat missions were concluded by midday, so almost everyone on post was free in the evenings. Many people met in the dining facility and played Call of Duty. This usually consisted of the US versus the French. These were usually friendly games. Many others watched box sets or worked out. During our time at Dubs I taught the intro class and for the first time I offered the ethics class. I had a young sailor in my ethics class. He didn’t have a lot of college under his belt, but I will admit for taking a higher-level class, he did a great job. Through his had work, he earned an A. I was very proud of his achievement. Well I was until one evening when the team was sitting behind of one the C-huts. Most were smoking a cigar and telling the “no shit ... there I was” stories, when one of the group asked then 1LT Adam Malty-Uhr about his last name. Adam replied that it was of Hungarian derivation. At this point the soldier said “wow! that is a very ethnic name.” As Adam nodded, the young sailor who did so well in my ethics class proudly chimed in and said my to my chagrin “that’s cool—I got an A in Major Camp’s ethnics class!” To which I quickly replied “no sailor, you got an A in my ethics class, not my ethnics class!’

About the Author
Jeffery (Jeff) Camp is a retired military veteran who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan during his 32- year career. Jeff has held numerous leadership positions, not only in the army, but also during his 20-year career with IBM. Jeff retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after commanding the 33rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion and completing the US Army War College with a Masters in Strategic Studies. He earned a Bronze Star during each of his combat deployments. Jeff learned to cook over the years, at first out of necessity and later out of desire, turning this hobby into his passion. During travels to exotic places, he took cooking classes to learn the local cuisine and incorporates many of the techniques and flavors into his recipes. Jeff is on the Board of Directors for Paws for Purple Hearts. He currently lives in Abu Dhabi, UAE with his wife Mari-Ann and their two cats.
